I’ve always believed that cooking is just another form of art, one that we get to experience with all five of our senses. There is something so incredibly therapeutic about the process of turning simple, raw ingredients into a meal that feels like a warm hug at the end of a long day. Lately, I’ve been finding a lot of my culinary inspiration in watercolor illustrations. There is a softness and a vibrancy to those painted colors that reminds me of how fresh food should look—bright, inviting, and full of life. Whenever I see a beautiful piece of art featuring pasta, my mind immediately starts wandering to the kitchen, imagining the scent of simmering garlic and the sound of bubbling water. I want to share a couple of my favorite recipes that always come to mind when I’m looking for that perfect blend of aesthetic beauty and comfort food.

The Timeless Charm of Hand-Rolled Noodles

There is a specific kind of magic in the golden hue of fresh egg pasta. Every time I see a delicate watercolor painting of long, flowing noodles, it takes me back to those slow Sunday afternoons spent dusting my countertops with flour. There is no rush, no pressure—just the rhythmic movement of the rolling pin and the satisfaction of seeing a dough come together. This illustration below perfectly captures that soft, almost glowing quality of fresh pasta that I strive for in my own kitchen. When the pasta is this beautiful on its own, I like to keep the sauce simple to let the texture and the flavor of the grain shine through. This Lemon Garlic Herb pasta is my go-to when I want something that looks like a masterpiece but feels like home.

Ingredients:

• 12 oz fresh pappardelle or fettuccine noodles
• 3 tablespoons high-quality unsalted butter
• 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
• 4 cloves of garlic, thinly sliced
• Zest and juice of one large organic lemon
• 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano
• A handful of fresh Italian parsley, chopped
• Sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste
• A pinch of red pepper flakes (optional for a little heat)

Instructions:

1. Start by bringing a large pot of water to a rolling boil. I always make sure to salt the water generously—it should taste like the sea. Cook your fresh pasta for just 2-3 minutes, or until it’s perfectly al dente. Reserve about a half-cup of that starchy pasta water before draining.

2. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter and olive oil together. Add the sliced garlic and red pepper flakes. Sauté them gently until the garlic is fragrant and just beginning to turn a golden blonde color. Be careful not to burn it!

3. Whisk in the lemon juice and a splash of the pasta water to create a light emulsion. Toss the cooked noodles directly into the skillet, coating them thoroughly in the lemon-garlic butter.

4. Turn off the heat and add the lemon zest, parsley, and parmesan cheese. Toss everything together until the cheese has melted into a silky sauce. If it looks too dry, add a little more pasta water. Serve it immediately with an extra sprinkle of black pepper on top.

Exploring the Diversity of Pasta Shapes

One of the things I love most about Italian cuisine is the sheer variety of pasta shapes. Each twist, tube, and shell serves a purpose, designed to capture a specific type of sauce in its own unique way. Ingredients:

• 1 lb of your favorite short pasta (Penne, Fusilli, or Gemelli work great)
• 1 zucchini, diced into half-moons
• 1 red bell pepper, chopped
• 1 pint of cherry tomatoes
• 1 red onion, sliced into wedges
• 3 tablespoons balsamic glaze
• 1/4 cup toasted pine nuts
• Fresh basil leaves for garnish
• Crumbled feta or goat cheese

Instructions:

1. Preheat your oven to 400°F. On a large baking sheet, toss the zucchini, peppers, tomatoes, and red onion with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Roast them for about 20-25 minutes until the edges are caramelized and the tomatoes have burst.

2. While the veggies are roasting, boil your pasta in salted water until tender. Drain and return the pasta to the pot.

3. Once the vegetables are done, scrape them—and all those delicious juices from the pan—directly into the pot with the pasta. Drizzle the balsamic glaze over the top and toss gently to combine.

4. To finish, I like to fold in the toasted pine nuts for a bit of crunch and top each bowl with a handful of fresh basil and a crumble of creamy feta cheese. It’s a vibrant, textured dish that looks just as good as it tastes!
